In the past software development could be broken down into two elements. Thin Client Development was server based and the user interfaced via web browsers. This made for small applications that could be rolled out to a large audience and was easily maintainable and scalable but had limited user interactiveness. The other method was Thick Client applications which resided on the user’s Laptop or Desktop often very large and slow to download and very difficult to maintain but had the advantage of a greater interactive user experience.
Then with the development of AJAX (shorthand for asynchronous JavaScript and XML ) which is a group of interrelated web development techniques used on the client-side to create interactive web applications or rich Internet applications , gave developers more power to create applications with a better user experience. With Ajax, web applications can retrieve data from the server asynchronously in the background without interfering with the display and behavior of the existing page.
Now with the latest technologies Microsoft has launched Silverlight which provides a retained mode graphics system similar to Windows Presentation Foundation , and integrates multimedia , graphics , animations and interactivity into a single runtime environment. In Silverlight applications, user interfaces are declared in XAML and programmed using a subset of the .NET Framework. XAML can be used for marking up the vector graphics and animations . Textual content created with Silverlight is searchable and indexable by search engines as it is not compiled , but represented as text (XAML). Silverlight is platform independent and can run on Windows linux and mac’s.
